Steinach Townhouse: A nineteenth-century gem brought to life
There comes a time when the soul senses beauty, perceives its ethereal presence and pursues it until finding it in the place where it seems to have always been waiting. That time belongs to those who possess the gift of perceiving the harmony of shapes, the warmth of materials, the naturalness of creative gestures, and authenticity, which is the purest gift of beauty.
In Merano, a pearl of the Mittel European culture, there is a corner where time seems to play with reality: the Steinach district. It is the medieval nucleus from which Merano was born, an area between the lively city life and the silent greenery that runs along the Winter Promenade. In this quiet oasis, the respectful restoration of Steinach Townhouse has brought much more than a nineteenth-century building back to life: it has given back to the community a part of its prestigious past and offers, to anyone who arrives here, a secret passage to a unique location.
A tribute to the joy of hospitality and mastery of artisans, Steinach Townhouse is, indeed, the perfect setting for a show that plays with historical periods, styles and atmospheres. The sun rays lightly touch the ice color of the external walls and the breakfast tables set on the large terrace overlooking Via Haller.
Light passes through the fluttering window curtains framed by light green shutters, and boldly flows inside. It fills all the 11 large suites, then it slides sinuously towards the original marble staircase, the impressive mainstay of the building. Inside, past and present blend together in perfect harmony: each room has been restored to reveal the essence of a lived-in and authentic home or rebuilt with great respect. What stands out is a home where objects from different eras and styles go together seamlessly to recreate a new yet profoundly genuine reality.
When you open the doors of the Townhouse, you are first greeted by the dark green majolica wall. The desire to touch them is irresistible. One step to the left and the large living room appears, the scent of the leather armchairs lingers in the air and a large French table overlooks the district.
Go up one flight to see the spacious suites appear. Here you can see the original wardrobes and wooden floors, both finely restored and combined with more modern furnishings. A few steps down a traditional door leads to the bistro where the breakfast is served. The small 1930s tables inside, which come from the first class waiting room of the Trento station, are paired with Lampes de Marseille by Le Corbusier.
This union between different elements and styles was strongly desired by the owners, the designers Roger Botti and Giulia de Andreis from Monza, whose refined intuition and sensitivity allowed many contemporary comforts to effortlessly become part of the original atmosphere, almost as if they had always been there.
Leading and orchestrating this dance of time today are Katalin Huff and Andrea Fenoglio, owners of the starred Sissi Restaurant and Pizzeria 357 in Merano. A couple, both in life and business, that brings out the best of three different cultures: the Hungarian, the Italian, and the Austrian. Thanks to their cultural background, they were able to create a unique concept of hospitality.

What our clients say
“I’ve known Ruth Gamper for many years. Through her, I’ve always discovered little Italian jewels that deserve coverage in our press – as well as internationally. In the end, Ruth is a talent scout. Any journalist on the hunt for a good story is bound to value her dearly, and should follow her with allert antennae. ”
